Tristan Cardey

Atwater FFA

Tristan is 15 and just finished his sophomore year at Atwater High School. He is on the Atwater Water Polo and Swim Teams, the Atwater FFA Farm Business Management Team, and was recently elected Atwater FFA Chapter Treasurer for the 2020-2021 school year. He is also active in 4-H, serving as a Teen Leader for the archery project and a camp staff member for Merced County 4-H Science and Adventure Camp. His future goals are to attend a four-year university and pursue a career in either Ag Mechanics or Ag Communications.

Tristan has been raising Boer goats for six years. He maintains a breeding goat herd of 17 does and one buck and is extremely proud to be exhibiting a market wether that he bred and raised himself. His goat, Nugget weighs about 90 pounds and is very wide and heavy-muscled. Tristan has worked hard with his goats this year, from timing his goat breedings to the right time of year, checking pregnant does in labor through the night, and attending and assisting with every one of his goats' births. He has been diligent in keeping his goats safe and healthy in all manners of weather and adjusting their feed as they move through different stages of development to ensure optimal health and growth. Tristan says, "My goat project has taught me responsibility and time management, and also how to prioritize things in my life in order to accomplish my goals.”

Tristan has been breeding and showing rabbits for five years. He competes at ARBA shows throughout the year with his Californian meat rabbits. He is proud to have bred his own market rabbits for the past two years. He also breeds and markets project rabbits to other youth exhibitors in the local area and Northern California. He has grown this project to currently include 15 breeding does and 7 bucks.

He is excited to be selling his homebred meat pen in the Merced Fair Virtual Livestock Auction. These rabbits are one buck and two does. Their mother was the Merced County Fair Reserve Grand Champion Single Fryer in 2018. Tristan has taken great care with his market rabbit project from timing their breedings to ensure the right sized finished rabbit, managing their feed for optimal growth, to selection of top-quality animals from his rabbit litters to exhibit the best possible meat pen in the sale.
