Fair Begins Search for Sheep Slogan
By Diane Booth Conway,
Merced County Fair Publicity Director

Flock of sheep cartoon   Sheep and lambs will be grazing in the spotlight at the 2008 Merced County Fair.

Sheep will be the theme of the 117th Merced County Fair. The Merced County Fair, which is a showcase for the county's agricultural bounty, is once again sponsoring its annual slogan contest for the 2008 fair. The contest is held now because a lot of the preparations for the fair are tied to the theme.
"We are looking for slogan ideas that sum up the importance of sheep to our county and its ag economy," said Robin Hauck, the fair's CEO. "The contest is a fun and creative way to get involved in the community and the fair, so start tossing around some catchy slogan suggestions."
The sheep industry is big in Merced County. Merced County ranks fourth in the nation in sheep and lamb production, according to the 2006 Agriculture Report from the Merced County Ag Commissioner’s Office.
Whether you are a lamb fan who just can’t get enough lamb kebabs, your fiber of choice is wool, or your favorite pastime is counting sheep, start dreaming up some tasty slogan ideas.
The first-place slogan will be used as the fair's theme. Once the winning slogan is selected, there will be a contest to find a logo design to illustrate the theme. Each year the slogan and logo appear on billboards, T- shirts, buttons, newspaper ads, posters, banners and on the fair's website to promote the fair.

The contest is for Merced County residents only and the deadline to submit slogan suggestions is Thursday, Aug. 30, 2007 at 5 p.m. The winner of the contest will receive $100 and two season passes to the fair. The second- and third-place entries will each be awarded a pair of season passes to the six-day event, which will be July 15-20, 2008.
To enter the competition, print or type the entries on one piece of paper.
Each entry must be five words or less and a maximum of eight entries per person can be submitted. No entries will be accepted that are the same or similar to other trademarked slogans.
Email ideas to Info@MercedCountyFair.com or entries may be delivered to the fairgrounds office, 900 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, or mailed to the Merced County Fair, 900 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Merced, 95341. Submissions should include the entrant's name, address and telephone number. Information about the slogan competition can be found online at the fair's award-winning website, www.MercedCountyFair.com
For more information, call the fair office at 722-1507.
