The Junior Fair Board consists of 12 members from throughout the county who serve as teenage ambassadors for the fair. The board is selected following an application process that recruited students from all over the county.
During the fair the junior board members are involved in a variety of activities including helping with pre-fair activities and setting up the fair. Members will lend a hand with school tours and at the Junior Livestock Auction. Their responsibilities also include greeting VIP guests at events including the Board of Directors’ media reception and attending the Friends Helping Friends annual event for special needs kids and adults.
Members must be 14 to 19 years old as of Jan. 1, live in Merced County and have a GPA of 2.0 or above to be eligible to volunteer. The program’s purpose is to provide young adults with the opportunity to develop leadership skills, perform community service and learn about the business and operation of the 35th District Agricultural Association.
The group's advisors are Jim Cunningham, Merced County Fair Board director; Debbie McGarry, fair Community Advisor; and Teresa Burrola, the fair’s Business Assistant.
The board members’ duties also include providing outreach in their communities and schools as well as providing input to the fair’s Board of Directors and staff about what kids their age want to see at the fair.
