Fair Was A "Saddle Up For Fun" Ride

Here are just some of the fun numbers from the "Saddle Up For Fun" 2011 Merced County Fair.

• 722 Kids from preschools, summer and Scouting programs went on the behind-the-scenes School Tours, Thursday, June 16.

• 1,300 Special needs kids and adults and seniors treated to a tour, mini rodeo, dancing and lunch hosted by volunteers at the "Friends Helping Friends" event, Friday, June 17.

• 9 Hit songs by Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship and Starship performed by Starship Starring Mickey Thomas at the Outdoor Theatre concert, Saturday, June 18. "Jane," "No Way Out," "We Built This City," "Sara," "Nothing Gonna Stop Us Now," "Find Your Way Back," "Stranger," "Laying It On The Line" and "It's Not Over Till It's Over."

• 8,799 Entries judged in all categories including junior collections, FFA ag mechanics, 4-H rocketry, FFA floriculture, 4-H plant science, 4-H stitchery and FFA gardens.

• 61,680 Attendance total – paid and unpaid – at the 2011 Merced County Fair.

• 600 Pounds of popcorn popped at the "German-Style Kettlekorn" concession across from the Outdoor Theatre.

• 1,525 Exhibits entered in Junior Arts and Crafts categories not including photography and fine arts entries.

• 132 Passengers that can take a spin on the "Big Wheel" Ferris Wheel at one time.

• 547 Goats, pigs, lambs and beef sold at the Junior Livestock Auction, Saturday, June 18.

• 384,149 Dollars. Total combined sales at Junior Livestock Auction.

• 113,793 Pounds. Total weight of all animals auctioned at the Junior Livestock Auction.

• 120 Years there has been a Merced County Fair.

• 25,440 Dollars paid for 265 lb. Grand Champion Hog at Junior Livestock Auction. The pig was raised by Jack Ford of McSwain 4-H.

• 400 Kids who pretended they were "Spiderman" and scaled the "Spider Mount Climb" attraction, climbing through the tubular tower's web-like center to the top.

• 3,800 Bottles of antibacterial hand gel handed out at the Mercy Medical Center booth's spin the wheel game in the Commerce Building.

• 300 Pounds of waffle cone mix used to make cones and wafers at "Legendairy Gelato," in front of the Grandstand. Birthday cake was the top flavor.

• 9 Kids who hung out at the Mercy Medical Center "Found" Children's Booth by the Grandstand until their parents picked them up.

• 40 Band-aids dispensed at the Riggs Ambulance First Aid Station by the Grandstand.

• 150 Life jackets awarded as prizes in the Merced Irrigation District spin the wheel game.

• 700 Pony rides enjoyed at Randy's Pony Rides by the Home Arts Building.

• Hundreds 5-minute shower timers awarded as prizes at the City of Merced's information booth in the Ag Exhibits building.

• 800 Eggrolls served on a stick or on a combination plate at Pon's Chinese Food. The SF eatery has been serving up delicious Chinese food at the fair since 1975.

• 750 Ball caps given as prizes in the Kragen O'Reilly booth's spin-the-wheel game.

• 1,500 Agua Frescas. Drinks bought at the Mexican food stand across from the Pavilion.
